As we already discussed what is TB (Tuberculosis). Just to summarize TB is a bacterial infection that can spread through the lymph nodes and bloodstream to any organ in your body. It is most often found in the lungs. So today we’ll talk about the treatment of tuberculosis. TB is no longer a disease through which a person can’t be recovered. Now days there are so many treatments available using which one can easily get recovered. But if we can find the Symptoms of TB in the initial stage itself, it can be done easily.

Tuberculosis is curable with standardized treatment. For a new or fresh case of tuberculosis the duration of treatment is six months, where for first two months, four drugs Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol and Pyrazinamide are used and for the next two months, two drugs – Rifampicin and Isoniazid are used. Treatment of Tuberculosis is daily and negligence of this can cause something serious. If treatment is not followed, TB can come back or the bacteria can become the drug resistant and this can be a serious problem.

WHO (world health organization) recommends Directly Observed Treatment Short course (DOTS) strategy that emphasizes the use of the most effective standardized, short-course regimens, and of fixed-dose drug combinations (FDCs) under observation to facilitate adherence to treatment and to reduce the risk of the development of drug resistance.

Prevention of TB

It’s always said that prevention is better cure. The same applies here too. So we’re going to share few presentation methods to avoid TB. These methods can be used to reduce any further case of TB-
  • 1. Educate the people about this serious disease.
  • 2. Educate the TB patient to cough into cupped hands
  • 3. Treatment should be done under the supervision of specialist practitioners.
  • 4. Wear tight fit masks
  • 5. Ensure proper fresh air in the rooms.
So these were few precautions using which you can prevent further cases of TB.

Talking about the treatment of tuberculosis, the aim of TB treatments are-
  • To make sure that the patient is completely recovered and can live a healthy life.
  • Prevention of the transmission of TB to others.
  • Prevention of the transmission of drug resistant bacteria.

The Drugs

I mentioned earlier, for a new or fresh case of tuberculosis the duration of treatment is six months. There are more than 20 drugs available for the treatment of TB which is used in different combination and different scenario. Out of 20 there are some drugs which are used only for the new patients where TB is not drug resistant where as others can be used in older cases when the Bacteria become the drug resistant. Below are the main drugs for treatment of TB-

•Isoniazid
•Rifampicin
•Pyrazinamide
•Ethambutol and
•Streptomycin
